CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Yugi Mutou
Age: 17-18
Canon: Yu-Gi-Oh! DM
Canon Point:

- Post-DM (A few months post-DM)
- Post-Pyramid of Light (contributes nothing personality-wise)
- Not counting Bonds Beyond Time (It's a dweeby crossover movie with an awkward timeline and it doesn't really contribute anything other than him knowing Judai/Yusei/Paradox. If I have to choose, then I'll choose post-BBT. I've already discussed it with Yusei's mun.)
- Pre-Dark Side of Dimensions (Which is a year post-series, and not even released yet, get hype!)
- Pre-GX (GX is like 10 years after DM, for the record)
Character Information: Here's his page on the Yu-Gi-Oh wiki. Sorry, it uses dub names/spellings, I'm playing from the original/subbed Japanese version.

Personality:

Timid with a not-so-confident demeanor, Yugi was bullied quite often in his younger years, which only cemented his lack of confidence. He's hardly petty or one to keep grudges, as he forgives easily no matter the crime, even if somebody has threatened his life or the lives of his friends. In fact, two of his current best friends used to hassle him until an even bigger bully beat them up, and Yugi put himself in harm's way to keep them safe because they were his "friends," and just trying to help him man up. Despite his past history of bullying, Yugi always sees the good in people, since his opponents certainly couldn't be that awful! He's also surprisingly optimistic for a kid with low self-esteem, believing that he and his friends can overcome anything and that anybody can be changed for the better.

Due to Yugi exercising his nature of compassion, selflessness, and pacifism in the name of friendship, he's made plenty of friends along his journey to find his partner's name and memories. Ever since he completed the Millennium Puzzle, an Ancient Egyptian pendant housing the spirit of an amnesiac Pharaoh who looks almost exactly like him (and will be mentioned as the Pharaoh, his "other self/the other Yugi," Yugi's partner, and finally Atem), and befriended aforementioned spirit, he had been eager to put his own life aside to help him. Although somewhat trusting to a fault and naïve at times, he's done some pretty dumb things such as hand over his Puzzle to a "fortune-teller" who ran off with it. Trusting strangers no matter how suspicious that they are is another one of his weak points.

Despite the smidgen of gullibility, he's very clever, especially when it comes to games. Board games, card games, video games, puzzles, games of all kinds are Yugi's forte, and being raised in a game shop owned by his fellow game-loving grandfather sure encouraged his propensity towards them. Seriously, his name means "game" in Japanese, loving them is kind of a given. While some people look down on him for playing games in class because of how childish it is, and maybe even believe that he's younger than he looks (he's in high school, thanks), he doesn't let it bother him, even though it's the source of some of his bullying. He was able to complete the Millennium Puzzle twice (although you could probably blame destiny for that one), despite being notoriously difficult to complete, and he's been able to easily figure out tricks and non-Millennium Puzzle puzzles. In Duelist Kingdom, he thought to do mind-swaps with his other self during his duel with Pegasus, who could activate a mind-reading ability with his own Millennium item, so that once one of them played a face-down card (a card that is only known to the player) and immediately switched before Pegasus could cheat with his mind-reading.

By getting to know the spirit of the Millennium Puzzle, Yugi formed an almost inseparable bond with him. However, what with the other Yugi's questionable beliefs about winning at any cost in the beginning, they began with somewhat of a rocky start until they eventually started along extremely well as the Pharaoh learned from his mistakes. Nonetheless, the two would even tease each other at times, with the spirit teasing Yugi about his crush on Anzu, and Yugi trolling him by setting the other up on a date with Anzu to talk to her, relax, and hang out at the nearby museum that happened to have an exhibit concerning archaic artifacts from Ancient Egypt. Although part of him never wanted his partner to leave, he knew that it was truly necessary for his other self to be laid to rest after finding his memories, because wanting otherwise would just be plain selfish, and that's not how Yugi rolls. Then again, if they hadn't been able to find the Pharaohs memories somehow, Yugi would have been happy to share his own and make new memories with him.

Throughout his adventures, Yugi and his friends had many precarious encounters with a myriad of strong, suspicious characters, many of which who tried to kill him and his friends. No matter how difficult his opponents were, Yugi refused to falter and almost always kept his cool, except for that one time in Duelist Kingdom when his other self tried to kill Kaiba, for example. The latter put himself in a situation where if he was attacked, he would have fallen to his death, and the spirit of the Puzzle wanted to attack him anyway. When that happened, Yugi felt like he couldn't trust his partner anymore and felt that he couldn't duel anymore, until his friends managed to calm him down.

In one particular life-threatening duel against his friend, Jounouchi, Yugi made a play in which the duel ended in a draw. Both of them were shackled to an anchor (card games are serious business) and the loser of the duel was to be dragged down to the bottom of the ocean while the winner (technically both of them) received access to a key to free themselves, so that both of them could be saved. Risking his own life to save another is one of his main character duties, after all, he was also impelled to sacrifice himself in the Doma arc, after his other self was tricked into making a move that would cost the loser of the duel their soul and ended up losing.

With the encouragement from his friends, Atem especially, his confidence was amplified enough for him to feel like he could face the world independent of his partner. Now, although Yugi isn't as stoic and confident as Atem, he remains an amicable, courageous fellow who, of course, loves all sorts of games and refuses to give up even on the brink of defeat. By default, he acts perky and friendly towards anybody that he meets. Furthermore, concerning his title as the King of Games, he's never by all means let it go to his head, and would come off as quite humble and modest instead if ever lionized, due to feeling that he certainly couldn't be that amazing and significant. Not only that, although even if he isn't a stereotypical manly man, he's still a man with a strong heart and spirit, who had never succumbed or became tainted by any evil. Then again, he's somewhat of a pervert, though, although what teenage boy isn't?

Even with Atem and the rest of his friends cheering him on, he still doubts himself at times. For example, with his friend and crush, Anzu, he feels as though he doesn't have a chance with her, especially since he thinks that she's more into Atem. It may have been one of the reasons that he felt the need to set them up on a date. He also doubted himself and his partner after the other tried to kill Kaiba in that one duel. Trying not to doubt himself is pretty hard when he had been bullied for so long! He's also shown to be a little awkward, being the King of Games doesn't make him the King of Grace, after all. When it comes to girls like Rebecca or Vivian Wong hitting on him, he'll definitely become fairly flustered, which also ties in with his humbleness.

Despite his flaws, Yugi was the stronger of the two Yugis in the end. Even Atem had thought so, never having told Yugi off for being too trusting of their enemies or anything like that. Although Yugi may never feel that it's the truth, Atem knows that his partner is free from the darkness in his heart. Yugi, on the other hand, still thinks of his partner post-series and has to get used to not talking to a spirit that he had gotten to know over time and overcoming problems on his own. Although he's grown more independent and mature over the series, he's still his dorky, compassionate, game-loving self.
